Tips for vaping virgins
If 2019 is the year that you’re looking to stub out the tobacco cigarettes for good in favour of a transition to vaping, here are some helpful hacks to set you on the right path.
Despite your reasons for making the switch, your first foray into vaping might seem like so much of a minefield, you’re this close to reaching out for the next packet of Marlboro’s.
But don’t let the endless amount of options and a little lack of know-how deter you…
Many of us here at Red Box have been there, done that and got the t-shirt. By following our simple steps, you’ll be wondering why you didn’t take the leap sooner!
First things first, what experience are you looking for?
Your first vape is often largely influenced by the tobacco products you were previously using, and how frequently you were using them. For example, if you were smoking a pack a day of full flavour Mayfair cigarettes, a transition to a vape with a high nicotine content would be a great place to start.
On the flip side, if you were only smoking one or two cigarettes a day, you’ll likely find that a lower nicotine containing vape would be more suitable, to begin with.
Thus, in terms of shopping for e-liquids, right away you can narrow down the selection by looking at the varying strengths of nicotine, which is always represented as ‘MG’ (micrograms) on the product labels.
Over time, many vapers will decrease their level of nicotine intake, or come away from nicotine-containing e-liquids altogether, as their body adjusts to vaping and their cravings for a ‘hit’ become less and less.
Next up - devices
This one is pretty dependant on the extent of convenience and/or involvement you want to have with your vape.
You only have to glance at the Vaping subreddit to see that it’s one heck of a hobby for many. From building mods to creating your own coils, you can quickly amass enough kit to warrant taking out a second mortgage. But don’t worry – if you’re just looking for something out of the box and ready to go, you’ll be more than spoilt for choice.
The options look a little like this…
Pod Vapes – Relatively new to the vape market, pod devices are practical, two-piece devices, ideal for first-time vapers. There’s the ‘pod’ half containing the e-liquid, which you plug into the battery section and then simply vape away. Many pod devices have replaceable or often refillable pods and they are ideal for use with nicotine salts, which give that familiar ‘throat hit’ experienced with regular cigarettes.
Vape Pens – Frequently referred to as the first evolution of an e-cigarette, vape pens vary in size, but most are compact enough to fit in the hand. Once again these are predominantly two-piece devices comprising a battery and a tank/atomiser that is heated by the battery. Due to their small size, they have a lower tank capacity, however, these are refillable when you need a top-up of e-liquid. Vape pens also make a great choice for those just starting out with vaping.
Box Mod Starter Kits – At some point, you might feel like upgrading your vape to something slightly more intermediate, which is where these larger, more capable devices come into play. Being bigger than the likes of pod devices and vape pens, the kits boast better performance and a longer battery life, usually due to their external vape batteries. You can even adjust the power and temperature via a digital screen if you really want to go wild! Starter kits can be used with different tanks, including mouth-to-lung clearomisers and direct-to-lung sub ohm tanks.
High Wattage Starter Kits – One of the most popular vapes on the market, in a nutshell, these are box mod starter kits with enhanced power. They come in a variety of sizes, performances, specs and capabilities, with plenty of opportunities for customisation for those a little more advanced with vaping.
What’s your flavour?
If the limitless device options weren’t enough, then the e-liquids are where you can really branch out!
Whilst you might not be ready for some of the more ‘out there’ flavours early on, there are definitely some gentle transitions you can make from one blend to another. For instance, if you enjoy the tobacco flavoured juices, you might consider moving to a deeper flavoured dessert liquid. Or if you’re into menthol, there are a whole host of fruity flavours with menthol combined for a little bit of a twist.
It’s very much trial and error and there are quite literally thousands of e-liquids out there to choose from. But the beauty of going into a vape store is that you can often try before you buy at dedicated tasting stations. So, from fruits to desserts, menthol, ice, drinks, sweets and tobacco – you’re bound to find something you’ll love.
Educate yourself and temper your expectations
Taking that initial step towards vaping is a challenge for many and whilst there are products on the market that mimic smoking tobacco cigarettes (i.e. pocket-sized hardware, high nicotine e-liquids), it’s important to understand that the experience of vaping will be different from that of smoking tobacco cigarettes.
But trust us - stay with it!
Your best bet, as with anything you can buy on the market today, is to shop around. Vaping is a very personal choice, but by following guides such as this and by heading to YouTube to look at product reviews, that minefield we mentioned earlier just might not seem so big!
